Going Out in the Rain – Notable Correspondence

A Google Gemini AI artwork, courtesy of Lindsay Turner

My thanks to Mr Lindsay Turner for his interesting emails and permission to share here:

Good afternoon,

You should let your readership know they can describe a landscape scene to Google Gemini AI, make successive changes and finally ask to modify into a watercolour, or oil painting.

I live on the very upper edge of Penrhyncoch, a village 3 miles north and inland from Aberystwyth. I have hillfarms and mountains outside just as shown in my described scene ‘watercolour’ AI generated.

Incidentally, Roger Deakin’s ‘Waterlog’ book legacy has seen a huge rise in year ’round wild swimming, or dips in the sea. TV programme after programme have bombarded us with the ‘mental health benefits. Why don’t you promote ‘going out in the rain’ only wearing a T-shirt, shorts and flip-flops? Write a Best Seller, make a fast buck! Naked on the patio in the rain, shopping in the rain wearing a T-shirt, shorts and flip-flops! Such a tremendous rush…..refreshing, wonderfully cold! Strangely, I’ve always loved the rain….from 13yrs….thoroughly soaking wet after a day-long heavy downpour lashing my face with a woolen donkey jacket ending up weighing x3 its dry weight. Getting thoroughly wet is bloody marvellous….Best sensation in the world!

A follow up email…

Thank you for the courtesy of acknowledging my email. I am 69yrs and robust, healthy….a wannabe great hobby ecologist. My library contains all the undergraduates textbooks and essential reading…..ecology, behavioural ecology, botany, biology, marine biology, Clapham, Tutin & Warburg…..not many missing. RSPB x10 binoculars, x20 to x60 National Geographic tescope and tripod. A Browning Trail Camera. And Rainbow….an 11wk old, non-pedigree, ‘working strain’, red Lakeland Terrier! Rainbow can ‘work’ rabbits in hedherows, bracken and gorse once ‘stock-steady’ (safe and ignoring farm livestock).

And I hope my ‘going out in the rain’ struck a cord!? Nearly every professional sportsperson is now taking freezing cold baths & SHOWERS! WE ARE COMPLETELY WASTING THE RAIN! WE HIDE AWAY FROM IT! RAIN IS FROM THE HEAVENS AND FREE! STAND NAKED ON THE PATIO WITH A TABLET OF WRIGHTS COALTAR SOAP OR LIFEBUOY AND POLY TAR SHAMPOO!

Big bucks if you write a book along the lines of Roger Deakin’s ‘Waterlog’! Short Chapters about getting soaked in the rain at the country’s best places as the backdrop. Countryfile?

Best Regards,

Lindsay Turner (Mr)
