A path through the woods with fog and green plants.

Which Way Are We Looking?

I took this photo in the South Downs a few days ago.

Which direction are we looking? North, East, South or West? And Why?

Struggling? Here’s a clue:

It was a cold day and colder night.

Spoiler alert, here’s the answer:

We are looking EAST

(It feels like there have been a lot of East answers recently, or maybe that’s just me.)

There are wind clues in the whippy stems blown over near the top right of the picture.

There is evidence in the mud patterns that were was once a big puddle near the bottom right of the picture (south is to the right).

But the best clue is that most of the ice has thawed on the plants on the left, but not on the plants on the right. The plants on the left of the track are south-facing, so we are looking East.
