The photo of the moon isn’t great, but if you look closely, you’ll notice that there is a very bright crescent with a fairly bright rest of circle. This is ‘earthshine’, the sun’s light reflected off the Earth, then off the moon back to us. The light has to pass through our atmosphere three times for this effect – it is a sign of very dry air and a good weather forecast.
