Common Centaury – Centaurium erythraea – is a small pretty flower, with five pink petals and a yellow centre.

It is found in fairly dry grassy places and sometimes sand dunes.

Common centaury tolerates disturbance and can often be found near paths. However, since it requires lots of direct sunlight, it is much more common on the sunnier south-facing sides of any verges.

To remind us of its love of light, it only opens fully in direct sun.
