I took the dogs into the woods for their walk this morning.
Whilst trying a shortcut through some understory trees and undergrowth, something gave me a very strong sense of direction.
The photo above is what I saw.
Which way are we looking?

We are looking due south. Did you spot the patches of rusty-coloured algae on the trees? This is trentepohlia and we can use it to find direction – it follows the same rules as using moss as a compass.
