Finding Direction Using Taurus

In my book, The Hidden Seasons (2025), I included some star navigation methods that haven’t appeared in writing before. The New York Times reported this in October 2025 (paywall).

One of these methods centred around the constellation Taurus.

Finding South with the Constellation Taurus

From the Hidden Seasons book:

“Taurus rises in the east and rolls through the south before dropping towards the western horizon. When the star Ain is directly above those known as Hyadum III and IV, we are looking south.”

The method can be used whenever Taurus is visible – between autumn and spring – but is easiest in midwinter.
