Gen Z Can’t Navigate Without Apps, Study Finds

A Carmoola study of 2,000 UK drivers revealed not only widespread gaps in car maintenance knowledge but also a growing weakness in navigation skills, particularly linked to reliance on technology. While the headline findings focus on maintenance, the broader research highlights how modern drivers are increasingly dependent on sat nav systems, raising concerns about their ability to navigate independently.

A key insight is the heavy reliance on GPS and navigation apps, especially among younger drivers. Around 28% of drivers aged 25–34 report using sat nav for every journey, even for short or familiar routes, indicating that navigation has shifted from a skill to an automated process. This reliance reflects a wider trend in which convenience is prioritised over developing spatial awareness or route-planning ability.

The study also exposes a clear generational divide in navigation competence. Older drivers are significantly more confident navigating using road signs, memory, and landmarks. For example, over half of drivers aged 55–64 say they would rely on traditional navigation methods if their sat nav failed, whereas only 44% of younger drivers say the same. A notable proportion of younger motorists admit they would need to stop and ask for directions, suggesting weaker independent navigation skills.
