I was walking in the Sussex countryside a couple of days ago and took this photo:

Which direction are we looking?
Was the picture taken in the morning or afternoon?
What lies on the other side of the hedge?
Answers below.

Which direction are we looking?
The quickest route to solving this one is to spot the wind trends in the foliage.
Look inside the blue rings above. The longterm winds have been blowing from right to left. Prevailing winds in the UK are from the SW, so SW is to our right. We are looking close to SE.
Was the picture taken in the morning or afternoon?
The leaves facing us are surprisingly bright (white ring). The sun is to well our right, ie. well to the west; it is late afternoon. There are also more clouds of this type in the afternoon than morning.
What lies on the other side of the hedge?
Look inside the magenta rings above. We have horsetails in the foreground and a willow in the middle distance, both signs of water nearby.
There is lots of water on the other side of the hedge, in this case a large pond.
