In nature, shapes are stories. There are always a hundred stories in every tree, because there are a hundred branches, each with its own tale to tell. But we can’t enjoy so many stories at one time.
It is most enjoyable and satisfying to pay attention to one narrative. To focus in on one clue or sign and listen to the message it is whispering.
Have a good look at this grand old beech tree above. What is it trying to tell us?
It has suffered trauma, for sure, notice how the main trunk splits into several smaller ones in the middle of the photo: the tree was decapitated many decades ago, probably during a storm. And the number of branches and lack of foliage tell us that it has struggled and is in serious trouble. But these are not our stories for today.
The tale I find most interesting, unsurprisingly as a natural navigator, lies in the shape of this tree’s branches.
Did you notice how the branches on each side of the tree follow very different trajectories?
On the left, the lower branches head out and continue on an outwards or even downwards path. On the right side, the branches quickly turn upwards and reach for the sky.
These are signs that this tree has been getting lots more direct sunlight from the left and that south is to our left. The branches on the right are reaching for the sky because that is the only place they sense the light coming from. A classic pattern on the north side of trees.
