Hi, I’m Tristan Gooley and I’m very proud to be a Woodland Trust Ambassador.
I’ve spent decades researching, teaching and writing about clues and signs in nature, especially in trees. Every part of every tree we meet, the roots, the bark, the branches, the leaves, they’re all full of messages.
And when we know how to decode these messages, every part of every tree can whisper a story to us. It can tell us something. This tree behind me, lovely beech tree, and these leaves nearest me are pale and quite small.
They’re sun leaves. This is telling me this is the south side of the tree, south is this way. But notice how they point at the ground too. That’s what we find on the south side of trees.
