Natural Navigation using Snow on Trees

In winter there are lots of new clues formed by the snow, including the strips of snow we find on the windward side of trees. Once we tune into the direction of that strip, navigating in snow amongst trees can be easier than without it.

We can also navigate using ‘snow shadows’ the zones where there is no snow.

There are two types of snow shadow, those formed by wind and shelter and those formed by sun and shade. For more information see:
