I went for a very enjoyable night walk in the South Downs last night.
What direction are we looking in the photo above?
Answer…
We are looking SW.
The sun sets near SW in winter.
The trees show that south is somewhere to the left of the picture (it’s a lot easier to be more accurate with tree direction when you can move round them, but that’s about as good as we can get from this perspective).
Jupiter is just visible. Using planets to find direction is tricky and takes a bit of experience. But once you’ve tuned in one night, the same method will work the following night too.
