The Beach ‘Step’

A very clear beach step

The ‘step’ is the line where the beach gradient steepens and the water suddenly gets a bit deeper.

It is marked by a line of shells and pebbles. Even when you don’t see the step, you can usually feel it underfoot.

Every beach in the world where waves break onto sand will have a step of some kind. Sometimes it is quite dramatic, steep with contrasting colours, other times it is gentle and hard to spot. But it’s always there.

If you are going for a swim in cool seas, the step is a cue to take a deep breath!
