Orion Returns

Look east just before dawn on a clear morning and you’ll now be able to see an old friend returning.

Orion is blotted out by the sun from May-July, but reappears at this time of year. For the next few weeks you’ll only be able to see this constellation briefly before the sun rises.

But with each passing day, the stars overtake the sun by another 4 minutes and this quickly adds up. Every fortnight Orion is visible for an extra half an hour. And by December will be so far ahead of the sun that he’s visible most of the night.

Orion rises in the east and sets in the west – for more on using him and other stars for natural navigation see this page or or these books.
