Whilst taking our dog for his constitutional walk in the woods this morning, my eyes were drawn down to a strange pattern amongst the broad, brown beech leaves.

Almost subconsciously, my suspicion had been aroused by something that looked out of place. Too green, too thin.
All around me there was a fine scattering of leaves that did not ‘fit’. A quick inspection revealed them to be fir needles. But there were no fir trees within half a mile of where I stood.
An investigation of the scuff marks in the ground led me to the solution, not far away.
A pair of Christmas trees, that had been dragged into the woods and abandoned.
