For those who do not yet know the name, Marvin Creamer, he is the American sailor, “noted for having sailed around the globe without the aid of navigational instruments. Between 21 December 1982 and 17 May 1984.” (from his Wikipedia entry).
An interesting email just in:
Tristan,
I thought it would interest you to know that Rowan University dedicated a special monument to Marvin Creamer on Thursday, October 28, 2015. I am including a few pictures. Marvin will turn 100 on January 26, 2016! He spoke for at least 15 minutes about his voyages and everyone was spellbound! He said that the idea had taken him captive and he was not released until he arrived in home port. Actually, he had accomplished his goal at sea when they crossed the path of departure, but he couldn’t make the claim until it was verified by the Coast Guard trackers.
The monument was constructed near a stream on the campus “Meditation Path” and has the contours of Creamer’s Globe Star outlined by rocks to remind of Stonehenge. In place of a mast is the signpost with distances to world cities. It also serves as a sundial. Landscapers made mounds of grass around the “hull” to remind of waves and the transom serves as the memorial stone. The memorial is called “Endeavor” because Creamer’s voyage was not guaranteed success but was very well planned and prepared.
Best regards!
Ralph V. Harvey
Congratulations Marvin and thanks Ralph!
