On exposed hillsides, sheep take shelter behind gorse bushes. Over time this kills the lowest branches, creates patches of bare earth and pieces of straggling wool hanging from other branches. This sheltered spot is normally on the north-east side of the gorse bush, as the gales come in from the opposite, south-west side.
