Navigation Conference

19 November 2009 by Tristan Gooley

navigation conferenceI’m just back from giving a short talk at the Royal Institute of Navigation‘s Land Conference at the National Physical Laboratory.

I learnt plenty from the other speakers and chats during the breaks. One little gem: the Apollo program nearly lost two astronauts, literally. They were roaming the lunar surface and became temporarily unaware where ‘home’ was. Without a map, compass, GPS or any other instrument there were some tense moments before they found their way back successfully. Definitely an opportunity for some natural navigation training in this niche market, as I was not too shy to point out to the assembled!

Something that makes a walk on the moon more challenging than on earth is that the moon has a much smaller radius and therefore has a more dramatically curved surface, the result being you cannot see nearly as far on the moon as you can on…

RIN AGM FRIN

16 July 2009 by Tristan Gooley

royal-institute-navigation-agmIt was the Royal Institute of Navigation’s Annual General Meeting yesterday and I got to shake hands with Prince Philip as he presented me with my fellowship certificate.  I am now allowed to put FRIN at the end of my name, which is very nice and a great honour but not something that will find its way to the end of my emails very often. Hopefully that explains what all the weird acronyms in the title are though.

Out of curiosity, I just searched Twitter for ‘Royal Institute of Navigation’ and much to my pleasant surprise found the following entry:

The Royals are tweeting! Innit? Respect…

All the best,

I opened some very usual letters this morning and then one very unusual and nice one telling me that I have been elected to Fellowship of the Royal Institute of Navigation, “In recognition of his demonstration and promotion of natural navigation techniques and his personal achievements.”

As starts to the week go, that’s right up there.

Welcome to the home of natural navigation on the Internet.

Natural navigation is the art of being able to find your way solely by using nature. It encompasses using the sun, moon, stars, weather, water, land, sea, plants and animals.

The Natural Navigator is the school set up by Tristan Gooley to research and teach natural navigation. It is also the title of his book on the subject.

If you would like to know more about natural navigation you can browse the website, read about Tristan’s natural navigation book, or listen to a BBC Radio 4 interview with Tristan.
